CASU meeting 3 March 2003 (MJI, JRL, STH, DWE)
----------------------------------------------

One of the problems we are facing as a group is the number of organizations
that we're reporting to and or liaising with: ATC, WFAU, JAC, VISTA, ESO,
UKIDSS, PPARC-WFAP, GSC (Grid Steering Committee)

In order to simplify things Mike has agreed with Jim Emerson that we'll have
quarterly reporting using a spreadsheet (or similar). This should sort out
the problem of who is responsible for what. Some of this stuff will have
tight deadlines.

The work packages are in the process of being set up. There's going to be
lots of subdivision of these which should make it easier to manage (but a
little more difficult to set up).

The basic set up of the WFCAM manpower is 4.5 people for 2 years. We are
effectively 1 man-year short since 0.5 DWE is on CMT and 0.3 of MJI and STH
is on research. On the plus side though we may get some effort from Will
Sutherland on the software/testing side.

For CASU as a whole we have 1.6 people's worth of research for 4 years. 0.6
of this is funding Floor's Hipparcos/GAIA work. The Observatory Rolling
Grant problem has "gone away" and the research element remains a fixed part
of our overall grant. All the Space work we bid for (~0.5 FTE) has been
lumped in with the research effort.

The UK GAIA Data Centre (if application successful) "will" be part of our
group. The expansion will include the AstroGrid people as well. A change of
name would be needed (Mike doesn't like CASU) to reflect the diverse (yet
synergistic!) nature of the new group. There would be ~15 members of this
group (Douglas has no problems with this), so a full-time manager would be
needed. A possibility exists of a refurbishment of the APM building to
accommodate more people.

There is a need to update the diary web page more regularly. The general
policy was stated of not placing names next to the tasks completed in this.
This will give us more flexibility within the group and with our reporting
needs. We should have a group meeting at least once a month. Simon was in
favour of once a fortnight.

Members of CASU++ should be encouraged to fill in their .away files more
regularly. We will have to break this news to Pete gently. In the near
future Jim's going to be away (21 March) at a meeting discussing data
centres and Mike and Jim will be away in Edinburgh for a critical design
review of WFCAM archive software (15/16 April).

Equipment was disscussed. This would be deferred until it was clearer as to
when the equipment would be needed. The original plan was to buy stuff in
the summer. This will be delayed since there is a redesign of the
cryostat mounting plate going on which will no doubt delay when the camera
will be completed. Simon wanted to buy a mini-setup soon to test the
pipeline. Mike thought we had enough as it was to do this.

Simon wanted a fancy job title. Mike said he could have anything within
reason. (What he really meant was that it should be clear who was
responsible for what).

There was a short discussion regarding the work packages. This will be
finalized in a meeting at the end of the week.
